Donate To The Geekogle Louisiana Oil Spill Clean-Up Fund

We usually like to keep things light around here. A joke here and there, a funny quip to entertain the masses, it’s all fun and games until someone loses an oil tanker into the ocean and screws up the wildlife.

And here is where you come in. Geekogle has started a donation fund to help with the horrible oil spill made by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. 100% of the proceeds go to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana foundation. You can either donate by clicking the link below, or go directly to their website and donate your food, time, or money towards saving the Louisiana coastline.

Not to push some teary-eyed pictures on you, but this one, as posted by the Boston Globe site, pretty much sums up what is going on down there.

Thank you to everyone who donated. Donations are currently closed.

Netherlands Billboard Raises Awareness Against Public Service Aggression

It’s not often that we see a great and innovative idea that does not simply advertise a company or product these days. Public service announcements are usually low funded and low budget, mainly because they are usually only supplemented by charitable organizations and non-profits. However, low budget does not need to equal low creativity. A rented medical truck, a green screen, and a few hours of video editing can do wonders when you are backed by a genius premise. This video, which uses a previously shot green screen scene of a simulated growing aggression towards public service workers in the Netherlands and surrounding countries, overlays to a live shot of outside. The excerpt from the YouTube author explains further.

Public service employees in the Netherlands face aggression and violence on the streets more and more often. Onlookers unfortunately do not intervene often enough when they encounter a situation like this. A live interactive billboard in Amsterdam and Rotterdam is used to place people in a similar situation witch confronts them with their inactivity.

UK Cuts Down 6,000 Trees Because Of Sexual Activities

Mar.23, 2010, under Politics and Religion
Tags: , , , ,

..wait, what? Yes, you read the title correctly. Apparently the town of Darwen has a bunch of horny teenagers who like to get their freak on at the local forest spot. So, as any rational country would do, they cut down over 6,000 trees. I’m not going to say they don’t have legitimate reasons for doing it, but it still seems a little rash.

United Utilities cleared the huge expanse of forest alongside the busy A666 claiming some of the trees, planted after the Second World War, were in danger of falling down. Police and councillors have said that the cull was also ordered to discourage strangers from meeting for sexual intercourse at the known ‘dogging’ hotspot.

There is hope they aren’t being total douchebags though,

Jean Rigby, a local councillor, said: “The area will be replanted with native species that, in 20 years, people will see the benefit of. I’m more than happy this is being carried out – and it has a double whammy in terms of the sexual behaviour. I’ve heard anecdotally that since the trees have been cleared, it’s quietened down a lot!”

While United Utilities notes that the trees that were cut were for commerical purposes only, and no protected species were cut down, hippies across the globe are no doubt going to be up in arms over this fiasco. On a totally unrelated note, that little gem of an image below is a “Logging Spider”, and I just peed myself a little. Enjoy your nightmares tonight kids!

Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter – The True Story

Words cannot describe how awesome this video is, so just watch it, then go buy the book. I don’t read myself, because I was born on a farm in northern Oklahoma where reading was a little taboo. We milked cats, just sayin’. All shenanagans aside, reading is for sissies. Why read a boring old book when you can put the smack down on some fools in Modern Warfare 2. Am I right or am I right? Headshot! However, if I were to actually read a book, you bet your ass this would be on the top of my list.

Google Maps Wants You To Buy Pizza During Earthquake

Mar.01, 2010, under Funny, Politics and Religion
Tags: , , ,

Saddened by the news of the terrible earthquake in Chile, Google Maps wants you to do your American duty to help out, and.. buy pizza.. I guess. This snippet, taken from some sort of website where you can find people, or give info on missing people (marco!) during the Chilean earthquake (polo!) shows Google in true economic form. Because, you know, searching for your family members in the rubble of a devastating earthquake is hard work, and what else would be more awesome after a hard days work than gobbling up some delicious Domino’s pizza? Nothing, that’s what.

Angry Traveler Tweets About Bombs, Gets Arrested

Jan.18, 2010, under Politics and Religion, Retarded
Tags: , , , ,

Just a hint for those of you who aren’t in the know: Talking about bombing your local airport for ANY reason is probably not a great idea. With that said, Paul Chambers is a moron.. and he’s British to boot, so that’s strike two (Just kidding you crazy Brits, I love you guys and your crumpets and tea). Apparently while traveling by plane, Paul was stuck in an airport due to weather conditions. Pissy and probably drunk, he tweeted

“Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high.”

Fast forward to January 13th, when the local police decided to pay him a visit with a paper copy of the tweet. I’m sure you can guess the rest of what happened. Paul was arrested, interrogated, and locked up under the World Terrorist Act until his trial date of February 11th. Along with that, the tweet was deleted, and his computers and iPhone were taken for evidence.

I’d like to make three key points here. One, Paul is a moron. Two, this is my 100th post. Yay me. And three, while I think it’s sad that this exploded (Yeah, I went there) into what was obviously just a frustrated traveler, I think if you’re stupid enough to post on the Internet a bomb threat, you should expect that an equally stupid agency should put the smack down on your ass.

Strike three, Pauly.

Ad Campaign Seeks To Open Eyes For Assisted Suicide

Dec.10, 2009, under Politics and Religion, Web & Graphic Design/Development

I know, it’s quite a touchy and controversial subject and there is a very clear line where people stand between. Couple that with the fact that I’m not normally a fan of shock valued ad campaigns, mainly because they are usually biased on an extremist ideology. However, this one seemed to spark a want to learn more, to see what the real facts are. And there lies the point of the campaign, and thus it is extremely successful, at least to me. And really, that’s all that counts. If I like it, you should too. Don’t sass me! Two more examples after the clicky.

Smartbook AG Says Internet Can’t Use Smartbook. Smartbook

Nov.25, 2009, under Computers & Video Games, Gadgets, Politics and Religion
Tags: , , ,

The phrase “smartbook” usually refers to a device that is neither a smart phone, nor a laptop, but rather something in between. However, German company Smartbook AG is attempting to use it’s global trademark rights and sue media outlets for the misrepresentation or usage of the word itself. So, again, we can’t say smartbook. Smartbook, smartbook, smartbook. The to-be-sued list currently are Qualcomm and Freescale, though now the company is actively pursuing smaller an non-European companies and bloggers, such as EE Times who went as far as pulling an article that used the word smartbook. Did I mention we don’t like censorship, and the people over at Smartbook AG can suck it? Smartbook.

Note to Smartbook AG: This is not the best way to get a consumer to buy your product, by suing them, in case you were unaware.

LHC Finally Collides Protons, Earth Still Exists

Nov.25, 2009, under Computers & Video Games, Politics and Religion
Tags: , , , , ,

In case you didn’t hear on Monday, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the CERN facility finally completed it’s first proton collision via two beams traveling at nearly the speed of light. Sources say the energy used was 450 GeV, well below the maximum power of the accelerator. I have no idea what a GeV is, but for all intensive purposes I’m going to say it stands for Giant Evil Voltron. Defender of the Universe! More importantly is the picture below of the actual scientists at the CERN facility when the images of the successful collision took place. Notice the blond girl in the lower right? Yeah, she’s not impressed. I bet she’s a party animal.. or not.

Quick recap:
Years spent on construction and failures? 14
Total dollar amounts (so far)? 5.5 BILLION
Problems/Delays? Faulty magnets, sobatage via a bird with a piece of bread, and time travelers.

And as a ending note, the world still exists. No black holes, no tearing of space and time and the utter destruction of the universe, which is good, so I hear.

Oregon to Open Two Reefer Smoke Houses, Duuude

Nov.04, 2009, under Politics and Religion
Tags: , , , , ,

Now before you judge, I’d like to say I don’t smoke pot (you hear that mom!), nor do I condone it outside of legitimate medical reasons. I am posting this for two reasons. One, I think it’s about time the local and federal legislation got a little more relaxed. And two, I live in Oregon, and it doesn’t surprise me in the least with the amount of hippies that live here. You know I love you, you tree hugging crazies.

Two smoke shops are going to be opened in the Portland area, which will give medical marijuana smokers a place to “socialise and medicate” in a safe environment. These are the first legally opened shops in the country since the federal government noted they will not arrest or prosecute patients or suppliers.

The two shops, named the Cannabis Cafe (Opening Nov. 13th) and Highway 420 (Opened Oct. 1st), will be operated and sanctioned by the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana. While California has already opened dispensaries, Oregon is the first to open lounges where people can socialise while being medicated safely and legally.

You must be a member of the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program as either a patient, caregiver, or grower to enter the building, and you cannot purchase medical marijuana at the shops themselves, as it must be purchased via standard medical dispensaries.
